Diving on the Heart

Descending through the ferns and plants I pause outside her door to clear my mask A plume of bubbles falls up to the trees and past them to a glittering sky I slide the doors ajar and fin inside

The woman’s on the floor with books I float down take her hands and look into her mask her eyes

She uncurls from a mug and swims into her kitchen I look up

The living room is cavernous the ceiling rippled by her reading lamp Faintly I hear stereo and very loud a blood thump in my ear Above it all rushing air and my breath boils and falls up to the ceiling

She comes back carrying tea Our eyes match once again and whisper of corpses, siren-suited sailors drowning in mermaids’ eyes

My mask floods suddenly Without regulators freed from rubber and salt our two mouths would have so much to say
